I have many baby name party tricks, but the easiest one — by far — is guessing people’s middle names.
Historically, the pool of middle names has been much smaller than that of first names. Some names — like iambic or single syllable names — naturally lend themselves to the middle position. And if you take generational middle name trends into account, it means I can usually hit upon your middle name within a guess or two (it’s probably Marie).
But my party trick is about to get a whole lot, well, trickier. Today’s parents are actively seeking creative, unique, and meaningful middle names. Middle names can now be anything and everything, but we’ve noticed some distinct trends.
This week on the blog, we analyzed thousands of birth announcements from 2024 to determine both the top middle names for babies and the most prevalent middle name trends.
But we know you, Berries, and a list of trending names is more likely to be taken as evidence of what NOT to name your baby than middle name inspiration. So we present to you: Unique alternatives to today’s most fashionable middle names.
It’s the best of both worlds. Think of them as on-trend, but not individually trendy.

This is related to the website (not the Substack). Why can’t we see all the names on a list all at once anymore? This change is such a hassle and makes nameberry so much harder and more frustrating to navigate. Half the time the page crashes before I can get through clicking on each page which ends up leaving me frustrated and not wanting to use it. Nameberry has always been my go to for names and I used to recommend it nonstop but the new formatting and updates are deeply frustrating.
I'm delighted to see that my first name has finally come around as something trendy! I'll take middle name if it can't be first.
