Are the Bridgerton Names Historically Accurate?
Like everyone else, we’re enchanted with Netflix’s Bridgerton. The delicious drama, dreamy sets, and most of all, the names! The Ton is full of gems, including Cressida, Benedict, and Hyacinth (swoon!).
Plus, our name-nerd hearts skip a beat when we think about what we would name eight children in alphabetical order (more on that later).
But which Bridgerton names are realistic for the time period, and which are pure fantasy? That’s the question we’re asking this week. Thankfully Eleanor Nickerson, an expert in the history of British names, has the answers on our blog.
Name of the Week: Hyacinth
The standout Bridgerton name is Hyacinth, the name of the youngest child in the family. It may not be the most realistic choice for a girl born in the 19th century, but could it be right for your 2021-born daughter? Hyacinth is rare but familiar and, having reached its peak about 100 years ago, feels ripe for revival.
List of the Week: TV Character Names
Popular television shows can introduce the world to new names and add to the appeal of those that are already stylish — think Quinn from Glee or Arya from Game of Thrones. Speaking of GoT, remember Khaleesi? It still ranks in the Top 600.
We recently updated our list of TV character names to include some of our favorite names from Bridgerton — welcome, Daphne, Eloise, and Penelope!
Question of the Week: What would you name eight children…in alphabetical order?
Put yourself in the Bridgertons’ shoes and tell us what your alphabetical sibset would be. There are already loads of great ideas on our Instagram!
And we’ve switched the rules — you can start from any letter of the alphabet, as long as the initials are sequential.
