Fun though these rankings always are – if you’re called John or Marie, anyway – we’d advise taking such lists with a sizeable grain of salt.
The majority of these names are historically hugely popular classics across the wealthy Western world, which is where the surveyed organizations tend to draw their membership from. And you’ll notice a prevalence of “Boomer” names for girls, reflecting the first generation of women afforded relatively equal access to higher education and employment opportunities.
Long story short: if you’re searching for a baby name that will inspire intellectual curiosity in your little one, you’d be better off looking to your own personal heroes for inspiration. Names of books, songs, places, people, even natural phenomena… Or, check out our master list of Names Meaning Intelligent or Wise 😉
We’re sure that the geniuses of the future will be named everything from Sage to Selasi, Kenai to Kamala!
Intelligent Naming in the Deaf Community
Talking of Kamala, have you seen this fascinating video about the process of choosing an ASL name sign for Vice President Kamala Harris?
It’s an enlightening insight into the deeply personal factors that go into choosing a name sign, whether for a public or private individual.
Here’s a brief excerpt from the discussion:
“Kamala” means a lotus flower. I will explain briefly what a lotus flower means. Purity. Enlightenment. Rebirth. A lotus flower has strong roots that can bore through dirt. The flower shows its beauty when it blooms. I am making it an analogy with Kamala, who appears in the midst of a dark and divided America. She brings enlightenment and purity. Rebirth. Why do we use three fingers? It’s because she is the first Black, Indian, and female, and it is represented in the three fingers that bloom. She’s not the “first” but has “three firsts.” Kamala!
