How to Have More Fun Naming Your Baby
Between this job and my role as a perinatal therapist, I hear a lot about the stressful side of naming a baby. When you’re tasked with naming a real person, the pressure can be strong.
As research for my article about how to make baby naming more fun, I chatted with my friends (and colleagues) Emma and Clare about what they did to lighten the process while naming their children. They had a lot to say about revisiting the good references.
From Emma:
I reread Chocolat in the run-up to Anouk’s birth. The character isn’t the reason we chose the name, but it’s a nice association and I felt a kind of rush of confirmation each time the name cropped up.
And Clare:
There's a book called The L-Shaped Room where at the end the narrator names her son David, and I reread that around the time he was born. It wasn't specifically after him, but it did sort of stick with me.
I don’t have any children yet, but bookish references to names? I have plenty of those.
One of my favorite books from childhood is Pass the Celery, Ellery!, which rhymes foods with names and is all sorts of fun.
I’ve carried it around with me over the years, naturally:
There aren’t many names in there that I would actually consider for a child (maybe Geraldine. I like Geraldine!), but a silly rhyming game like the one in the book could be exactly what you need to jump-start the baby name conversation.

Speaking of children’s books, we’ve put together a list of our favorite children’s books with names in the title — because it’s always fun for a kid to see their name in print!
Featuring some of the classics — Eloise, Olivia, Owen — along with newer gems (Alma and How She Got Her Name is adorable and about names — win-win!)
