Some of these feel very much like the way Australians come up with nicknames - sometimes nicknames make no sense here until they are explained. Examples I know of in real life:
- Veronia called Bubbles - cause she blew bubbles a lot as a kid (I literally didn't even know her real name until I was in my 30s).
- Wayne Bruce called Man Bat - cause his name was the inverse of Bruce Wayne (Batman)
- Omar called Washing Powder - cause we have a brand of washing powder in Australia called Omo...
- Joy called Jumper - a play on the saying 'jump for joy'
- Someone who's name is A. Vo whom gets Avo (short for Avocado).
- Hannah called Bear - cause she was referred to as Hannah Bear as a baby.
Not suggesting any of these should be used as names (Bear is probably the only one that's remotely appropriate), but thought it was funny to share.
Thank you for sharing these - they were so fun to read! I love the creativity - Jumper for Joy and Man Bat are my favourites - though Avo is pretty cool too!
Some of these are pretty cool. I'm a fan of untraditional names but for those who aren't, it's great having names lean more traditional and having a wild word name as a nickname or middle name.
I prefer the reverse, as in a chid called Amy whose given name is Amethyst, or an Anna who turns out to be Anastasia, or an Ally whose name is actually Allyn after her dad. Nicknames tend to stick, but sometimes given names need to be grown into.
It is always exciting to find out someone with a familiar nickname has an unexpected full name!! Like Isadora 'Izzy'! Though I always feel a bit sad the more unique name isn't being used 😆 I do like Amethyst 'Amy' though :)
Love these ideas -- it's definitely a way to go wild without risking your child's future!
for sure! I like the idea that these fun names are possible without being a child’s only option :)
