The most irritating thing — if you know a thing or two about names — is when character names in books or movies or TV shows aren’t realistic.
I recently read a book with two female characters, born in the 1960s, named Kennedy and Jude. The odds of that are slim. In 1963, there were 13 baby girls named Kennedy and 6 baby girls named Jude. Had they been born in 2013, these names would have been much more plausible.
The book was great, but it did pull me out of the narrative at times. Believable character names add to the realism of stories!
Thankfully, we have an expert sharing tips on the blog this week. Author (and Berry!) Maria Frazer gives her advice on choosing realistic yet evocative names for your characters.
The young heroine of her latest book is named Margarita, a rare but plausible choice for a girl given a family name. You could say Frazer knows what she’s doing.

My TikTok algorithm has caught on. The app knows I’m a name nerd, so it serves me name content up and down my For You Page (and baby videos. Lots of cute baby videos).
I see it all. And when there’s something especially funny or cool or interesting, I share it with you. My favorites this month are highlighted on our Instagram, and here’s an extra (just for you!) that was too long to post in the Instagram carousel.
