Unisex, USA
Meet the States’ favorite unisex names!
Unsurprisingly, Avery sweeps most of the nation (it’s top-ranked for the country as a whole), but some interesting regional trends have emerged. Logan is a favorite in the Mid-Atlantic, and Sawyer is only a top choice in the North.
I’m particularly interested in the one-off favorites, like Angel in New Mexico and Remington in West Virginia.
Our blog goes into deeper analysis and reveals the Top 3 unisex names in each state.
Another case of regional popularity, but on the micro-scale. Depending on where you live, so-called “normal” names like Annie feel totally unique.
Compared to names like Ireland and Odin? Yep, Annie is a surprise.
This variation is often seen at the community level. My current neighborhood is filled with babies called Maya, Charlotte, William, and Ella. But just 14 miles away, where I used to live, I knew children named Mars, Ilse, Clement, and Tirzah.
Top Dog!
I love dogs. Per my lease, I am not allowed to own one at this point in time, but I convinced my landlord to let me babysit the pets of my friends and family. My recent guests have included a Ziggy, Fisher, Presley, and a Sequoia. The current inhabitant is Apricot the miniature poodle 🐩
I’m *almost* as invested in dog names as I am in baby names (which is to say, very). The Top Dog names of 2020 were recently released, and I got down to business analyzing trends and popularity shifts.
Bella and Max take the titles again (how many years in a row is that now?), but keep an eye out for more Novas and Winnies, Kobes and Archies at the dog park.
And if you’re searching for the perfect dog name, you can get inspiration here, or follow this handy-dandy formula that I developed:
The Perfect Dog Name = A 2-syllable (+/- 1) name that you love and could but cannot/will not use for a child.
*Disclaimer* you can’t always predict the names you’ll want to use for a child. My biggest name regret is calling one of my former dogs Harvey — which would totally be on my baby name list if it wasn’t already taken.
Naturally, I have had my future dog’s name picked out since I was sixteen. It follows my formula and is absolutely top secret. But I’ll give you a hint: it’s on this list.
