Top 10 Coolest Names Right Now
We count down the Top 10 coolest (or craziest) names we’ve spotted this week. Any guesses for the #1 slot? 👀
As a lifelong name lover, I am always on the lookout for great names.
I scan the credits of every film and TV show, I read every book dedication (recent sightings include Loveday, Tuesday, Emil and Rex) – I’ve even been known to wander around graveyards checking out all the names on the headstones. Not my finest hour!
My family and friends know all about my name obsession, and I frequently receive messages like this one from my husband 👇
(In case you’re wondering, it’s a Welsh saint’s name.)
So I’m always excited when there’s a particularly newsworthy week for names – and this week has delivered!
Here are my Top 10 names in the news this week, from the super cool to the ever-so-slightly crazy. Any guesses for the #1 spot?
10. Harris
Scotland released its official name data for 2020 this week! 🎉
There are some real gems in the Scottish Top 10 – from rising stars Isla and Freya for girls to classic Scottish choices like Finlay, Rory and Harris for boys.
Harris is a rugged yet refined sounding surname name that ranks all the way up at #6 for Scottish baby boys, inspired by the Hebridean island of the same name.
9. Ever
It’s the ship that launched a thousand memes: the Ever Given has been stuck blocking the Suez Canal for almost a week now.
Yes, yes, terrible for world trade – but could all the publicity give an extra boost to cool modern virtue Ever? We’re watching the whole family of Ever names for 2021 and beyond… 👀
8. Destry
We’ve been talking hipster cowboy names on the blog this week, and I was excited to spot this rare gem!
Destry was given to only eight baby boys in the US last year, despite its cool cowboy style, fashionable sound, and handsome nickname Des.
7. Ramona
Iconic author Beverly Cleary sadly died this week aged 104, and her most famous character’s fabulous name has been on my mind even more than usual. It’s certainly one of the most instantly recognisable baby names from children’s books.
We almost used Ramona for our youngest daughter, and I still have the occasional “what if” moment… It’s just such a cool and characterful name, with a strong meaning and retro appeal.
6. Astraeus
With Atreus one of the Top 10 fastest rising boy names last year, and Astraea one of the Top 10 fastest-rising girl names on Nameberry, starry-eyed Astraeus is starting to feel like a viable possibility ✨
It made our list of 100+ Extravagant Boy Names this week – one of the tamer options on the list, if you can believe it!
5. Marigold
Vintage? Check! Nature name? Check! Pop culture connection? Check!
Sweet and sunny Marigold ticks so many style boxes – and indeed, it’s shooting up the charts right now. It’s also one of the hottest names on Nameberry, meaning that it saw more than double the average increase in pageviews over the past year.
Check out this birth announcement on our Instagram for a gorgeous little Marigold Alice. How sweet is Goldie for short?! 🧡
4. Zevi
Chag Pesach sameach! The festival of Passover has just begun, and in honour of the occasion we’ve been looking at some of the coolest modern Jewish baby names.
There are so many awesome short and strong options on the list, but zippy Zevi jumped out at me immediately as having serious potential in the US. Amazingly, it was only given to seven baby boys last year!
3. Jupiter
Sometimes at Nameberry, we hear a celebrity birth announcement so cool that we immediately start messaging each other about it. That was the case with Ashley Tisdale and Christopher French’s new daughter Jupiter Iris, born earlier this week.
Jupiter actually featured a few weeks ago in our video predicting the next big baby names (bravo, Clare!) Surprisingly, current usage is about 75% female in the US – no doubt due to the popularity of soundalike Juniper.
2. Triptych
In “how did I miss that?!” news this week, I stumbled across the story of baby Triptych Alabama Bliss “Trip”, sister to Hieronymus Vladimir Azax “Hiero” and Dionysus Cosmo Chaos “Chaos”.
Their mother Olivia is quoted as saying “Hiero’s best friend is Fox. And he goes to school with a Raver and a Wilder”. Where do we sign up? 🙋
1. Warrior
And the #1 spot goes to… Warrior! This powerful word name was chosen this week by Bindi Irwin in honour of her late father Steve, whom she describes as “the most incredible Wildlife Warrior”.
Warrior joins the list of empowering names given to high-profile baby girls in recent years – think Usain Bolt’s daughter Olympia Lightning and Nick Cannon’s Powerful Queen. And while that last example is a bit too literal for me, it’s a trend I’m definitely ready to embrace! 💪
If you’re also a fan of warrior names for girls, check out our lists of badass princess names and names that mean powerful.
I love Warrior!! My cousin actually recently had a baby and named her Ever Mai, so I am close to that name as well. Can't wait for more!!
