Nameberry is of course the world’s largest website devoted to baby names. But did you know that we also have an entire section of our site dedicated to pet names?
Naming a pet, whether cat, dog, bunny, fish, or chicken (yes, we name chickens) can be even more fun than naming a baby.
With less stress and pressure and more room for creative expression (this is a great outlet for that list of guilty pleasure names accumulating on your notes app), you don’t have to worry about your in-laws’ negative opinions when naming a furry, scaly, or feathery friend.
As an avid pet enthusiast myself — I have had over 30 pets in my lifetime — pet names have a special place in my heart. The current crew includes my dog Raven, cat Phoebe, leopard gecko Oona, mouse Huckleberry, fish Elio, and snails Barnaby and Maude.
To feature some of Nameberry’s best pet name lists, let’s play a game that has been trending on the forums lately called “WWYN”, or “What Would You Name __?”

Now it’s your turn: What are your pets’ names? Let us know in the comments!
Cat; Pepper I didn't name him. I also had a cat named Puff, I named one Sugar, Xanadu, and I've been told I have Edwardian pretentiousness when it comes to naming schemes. Personally? I think they're right. I love philosophical, deeply meaningful and symbolic names, as well as long 'unusual' names. Take Grimshaw, Sulien, Miette, Salem and Jedrek for instance. Some of my favourite names. God, please help the next animal I adopt, because that's gonna be one swanky little baby with a terribly obscure and unpronounceable name.
My doggie’s name is Bronte, after my favorite authors. She’s also part Yorkshire Terrier, which is related to the general area the Bronte sisters lived—Yorkshire. I do have to say, as much as I love the name, people don’t seem to get it on the first mention. They almost always ask, What was your dog’s name again?
