I love the name Cosmo, and I love funky names over traditional names, but there are two factors that make me think it might not be the best for your family.

If you're thinking about having more children, will you be stuck naming all the kids with the letter C? I know I would have felt left out if my parents and sibling had matching letters and I didn't. IF you're planning on having at least two more children, and both of them have names that don't start with C, then it'll be fine to name one child with a C name.

A last name with O might sound too matchy, too rhymy. I don't think Cosmo Marino sounds bad, because the stress is on the first syllable is Cosmo and the second syllable in Marino. If your last name was Maslow, however, with the stress on the first syllable, it will sound too matchy. So, it all depends what your last name is and how it sounds together!

I have 7 children and some of the names that “got away” because of the town we lived in/friends we had at the time/life circumstances at the time ended up being completely irrelevant concerns because we moved/they moved/job change/new hobbies/other unforeseen circumstances. The only concern I have for you is if the starts in C, ands in O, is going to make you feel too locked into a superfluous theme. If you have more children, would you feel obligated to use another C name? If you don’t want to be backed into a corner, either resist that urge when the time comes, or realize the corner now and choose another name. Congratulations and best wishes.

Yes! I am more concerned about the same initial situation than the style. Cosmo is a great name, but I also wonder if you will feel obligated to choose another C name for future children. Plus, the same initial thing. . . .think about whether that gives you a Kardashian/Duggar vibe, and whether or not that bothers you!

Ellis came to mind when thinking of the in-the-middle names :)

We hesitated for so long between Lucy (more common) and Winifred (very funky). We went with Winifred & haven’t regretted it; if we’d played it safe I think we would always be wishing we’d been bolder!

I love Sophie's idea about contemplating potential combinations of this child's name with future children's names. When we chose our first child's name, we knew it would forever eliminate other names of certain styles that we liked.

ALSO, try imagining your child at different stages of life with the potential names. A baby sporting a moniker evokes different imagery than a teen or an adult with the same name.

ANOTHER IDEA: You could always use the traditional name for a first name, and the adventurous name as the middle. That way you always have the option to call him by the adventurous name, with the traditional name available if needed for more formal circumstances as he grows.

BTW, I have a son named Gabriel (Gabe) who is now 23, and his name has always been just unusual enough to not be boring, but traditional enough to feel comfortable in any situation.

You can choose fear, or you can choose love. Even in naming. Love always wins!! Imagine you named your son each name. Imagine the challenges or comments with that name. Which would have the biggest regret?

Cosmo is great. Some other ideas or themes could be: star, space or constellation names. Unique but not wierd C names. Fancy but not ultra fancy names. For boys we loved Benedict, Cameron, Mateo, Cassius, Otto, Arlo, Orson, Orion, Chase, Cooper, Coleman, Colt, Colson, Cole, Crawford, etc. Good luck!

It's okay to not feel connected to the names you once liked now that your son is on the way. It's fine to not be decided on a name before the baby is born. Perhaps it may even help to see his face and get a sense of his personality! Does he look like a Cosmo? Does he give Gabriel vibes? Personally, I think Cosmo is a cute name. I also file it under classic names, but others may not because it doesn't have the same length and "elegance" that other classic boy names do. Additionally, the -o ending on your last name might feel a little rhyme-y or repetitive. Try saying his full name over and over in different tones. Is it something you'll like when you're cuddling your baby as much as when you scold him as a teen?

While my first thought is Cosmo Kramer (Seinfeld)(quirky character)…my second thought is -wow! What a great name. I vote for Cosmo.

Cosmo will always make people think of Cosmo Kramer from Sienfeld. A bit too wacky and unpredictable. Something more like Caspian or Cassius?
